It seems we all remember being fascinated watching the Nutcracker ballet around the holidays when we were a child. Now as adults we can look at it with an appreciation for the hard work and talent of the dancers bringing out a desire to give it a shot.

When you want to work on the technique behind ballet you are in for a lot of work. There is a reason that ballet is referred to as the root of all dance. The technical skills that are involved in this type of dancing are really phenomenal, and in your quest to master them you need to put in quite a bit of work.

To improve your ability to dance ballet, you have to start with the basics. Although people tend to want to work on the more interesting and exciting skills, which are often also more complicated, it is a mistake to do so before having mastered the basics. Jumping ahead of what you can do results in learning the techniques wrong and it is incredibly difficult to forget the bad habits learned and re-teach yourself the right ways. The best thing to do is avoid getting in this situation in the first place.

To avoid this begin with the absolute roots of ballet. Review the foot and arm positions, and spend some time critiquing yourself in the mirror. Make sure that each of the standard ballet positions are at home in your body before you move onto pirouettes or grand jete’s.

While you are learning your technique it is recommended that you have another person, such as your teacher, to watch and correct you if something in your technique is incorrect. You can?t do this yourself as you may not see something whereas another trusted person can.

One thing to keep in mind is to never expect results too quickly when working on ballet techniques, because it takes time for muscles to build up memory and also to correct techniques being done wrong. You should take your time when studying and allow your body the time it needs to adjust to any new positions. This way, you will learn correctly and improve skills.

If you decide to put your heart and soul into ballet and make a real deep down commitment then you can progress in your craft of ballet. To make improvements you will really need to stretch and apply yourself to learn this craft you have chosen, ballet.

When you were a child may have been the beginning of the dream of learning ballet but do not fool yourself into thinking it is a short time craft to learn. No matter how much you learn there will always be more which is also why it is imperative that you embrace learning ballet with all your heart and soul.

If you are considering taking dance in Arlington, one of the places you might consider is found at this website, with more info about dance instruction in Fairfax.
